As the Christmas season of parties, decorating and shop til you drop gets into full swing, both Richmond Fire-Rescue and the local Mounties are urging people to stay safe.
Gatherings, holiday decorations, lit candles and increased usage of space heaters and other appliances are common at this time of the year.
Fortunately, most holiday hazards are easily preventable, as long as residents take simple precautions and are aware of the environment theyre in.
Safety tips
z Never leave a burning candle unattended and make sure that candles are in stable holders. Keep candles away from anything that could catch fire, such as trees, decorations, curtains and wrapping paper and also away from children and pets. Always extinguish the flame before you leave the room or go to sleep.
z If you choose to have an artificial tree, ensure it is labelled as fire retardant. Be sure the lights that you place on your tree are Canadian Standards Association. Avoid overloading electrical circuits with too many lights and inspect electrical cords for cracking and discolouration. Always unplug your Christmas tree and other indoor decorating lights before leaving your home and before you go to sleep.
z If you choose a real tree, be sure the bottom of the tree has a fresh cut to absorb water. Remember to put the tree in a stand that will hold four litres of water. Ensure the tree is stable and away from fireplaces, heat ducts and other heat sources. Refill the water daily to keep the tree hydrated.
Other precautions:
z Dont withdraw more money than you need when visiting ATMs. Thieves lurk in parking lots around financial institutions. Be aware of your surroundings and take note of anyone following you.
z Children should never be left unattended while shopping. Children are abducted every year, often in malls or department stores. If for some reason your child becomes separated from you, make sure they know what to do. Have them go to the nearest cashier to tell them they are lost.
z Dont make it easy for pickpockets and thieves. Men should carry their wallets in their front pockets while women should carry their purses close to their body. Avoid wrapping purse straps around your body as doing so could cause injury in the event someone grabs your purse.
z If possible, park under lighting and close to entrances. Never leave your children unattended in your vehicle and place your purchases in your trunk. Purchases visible in your back seat can be stolen by simply smashing your window. This also applies to any other item left in plain view.
And last, but certainly not least, if you plan on drinking, dont drive is the message Counter Attack check stops targeting impaired driving will be in full effect.
Make arrangements to have a designated driver or utilize transit or holiday season initiatives such as Operation Red Nose.
