Be safe this Halloween

Richmond Fire-Rescue and RCMP want to remind residents of important safety tips as well as fun events happening this Halloween.

Richmond Fire-Rescue and RCMP want to remind residents of important safety tips as well as fun events happening this Halloween.

Children under the age of nine lack the developmental skills to cross the street safely on their own, so please accompany children while they go door to door, said Deputy Fire Chief Kim Howell.

Trick-or-treaters:

- Wear light-coloured or reflective costumes that can be seen easily by motorists.

- Be sure you can easily see through your mask or wear makeup.

- Wear flame retardant costumes.

- Be sure that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping.

- Travel while there is still daylight and carry a flashlight.

- Travel in groups, preferably with a parent or guardian.

- Do not carry sharp or pointed objects.

- Do not eat any treats until your parents have checked them over.

Treaters:

- Keep your porch light on and the path to your door clear.

- Offer only commercially wrapped treats, coupons or gift certificates.

- Watch for goblins when backing out of your driveway.

- Slow down while driving and watch for trick-or-treaters on foot.

RCMP will exercise a zero tolerance approach when it comes to the use of fireworks, which are illegal to buy, process or sell in Richmond. Fines range from $250 to $1,000.

Instead, Minoru Park will have its free annual pyrotechnics on Oct. 31, with music, dancers, clowns and more fun activities.

Three community fireworks displays will also take place on Oct. 31 at 8:15 p.m.

z McLean Park, 22500 McLean Ave.

z South Arm Community Centre, 8880 Williams Rd.

z West Richmond Community Centre/Hugh Boyd Park Oval, 9180 No. 1 Rd.

Prevent leaf-related

hazards

Richmond residents are being asked to help prevent flooding and slipping caused by fallen leaves.

The city has proposed several disposal options such as composting leaves in backyard bins, which can be purchased at the citys recycling depot, or recycling leaves through the Green Can program, which will be collected. Leaves and trimmings can also be dropped off at Ecowaste Industries.

Storm drains should also be kept clear of leaves, as they can block rain water and result in localized flooding.
