Twenty-one new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Richmond over the past week, for a total of 157 since the start of the pandemic.

There have been 21 new COVID-19 cases detected in Richmond over the past week, according to the BC Centre for Disease Control.

Last week, 20 cases were reported.

The total number of COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic is 157, up from 136 last week.

Over the past two-week period, Aug. 21 to Sept. 3, a total of 32 new cases were reported. The BCCDC released its latest numbers Thursday afternoon.

COVID-19 cases have been on the rise over the past several weeks. On Thursday, health officials reported 89 new cases in B.C. in the past 24 hours. Across the province, 34 people are in hospital, 11 of whom are in intensive care.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said Thursday that B.C. is on the “precipice” of a potential surge in cases, at around 65 per cent of pre-pandemic contacts.

“We’re at that limit, we’re at that precipice, if you will, where we need to take the actions to ensure that we can move forward into the fall and keep our curve low,” she said.

If people expect to have more interactions in the coming weeks – for example, by returning to work or school – then they should consider reducing their contacts outside of those settings, said Henry.

“Now we have the choice, as we are moving into the fall, where we know more people are going back to work, we know children will be going back to schools, we know the respiratory season is coming, we need to all continue to make those choices that keep our communties, our elders, our loved ones and ourselves safe.”

Those who have symptoms can get tested at the Richmond Assessment Centre at 6820 Gilbert Road.
