Burnaby Neighbourhood House is appealing for donations after a flood late last year resulted in extensive damages to one of its buildings.
A GoFundMe campaign by the organization says a water pipe burst in the ceiling of its South House location on Dec. 23, which affected the Welcoming Place, reception and extending offices.
"What used to be a frontline central hub for drop-in visits, grabbing a cup of coffee, making connections, and engaging in the community is now closed due to the flood damage," the online fundraiser states.
"This was also the place where we utilized the many skills and talents of multi-lingual volunteers who assisted us to welcome newcomers and provide information in different languages. This past year alone – even with COVID restrictions – over 11,000 people either came in-person or called over the phone looking for help, resources and referrals."
In an email, Burnaby Neighbourhood House CEO Antonia Beck said the Welcoming Place will be closed until repairs can be completed.
Although the organization has insurance, Beck said the deductible is $10,000.
"We are appealing to the community to help us restore this vital place for connections and belonging," she explained.
As of this publication (Jan. 21), $1,045 of the $10,000 goal has been raised.
