The app for Weatherhood — Richmond and Metro Vancouver’s only hyper-local weather network — has officially launched.

Less than three months after the release of the online weather network, residents in Richmond and Metro Vancouver can now access the forecasts throughout the region on their Apple and Android devices.

Users can view real-time temperature, precipitation, wind and humidity data collected from more than 50 sensors strategically placed throughout the region.

“The Weatherhood App puts the most accurate weather available in Richmond and Vancouver right at your fingertips providing many valuable options and forecasts,” says Kemp Edmonds, Weatherhood’s director, noting the application’s “unmatched accuracy, comprehensive weather data and seven-day forecasts.”

The weather is the most common topic and most “important local news topic” for day-to-day conversations, according to Edmonds.

“After the economy, weather is the top determinant of consumer behaviour,” he adds.

“Most of all, having access to the most accurate weather means being ready for the beauty days and the raincouver days that can change in an instant.”

Weatherhood is a partnership between Glacier Media, Switzerland-based Meteoblue, UBC’s Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and the many community groups and organizations that are hosting a sensor.

The service is only available in the Lower Mainland and the coast; however, Edmonds says there are plans to expand in the future.
