A Taiwanese food pop-up event in Richmond is helping businesses from Taiwan introduce their food products to the Canadian market.
Ten companies from Taiwan and six local food companies are showcasing more than 40 Taiwanese food products, such as vegan jerky and instant bubble tea, at the event in Aberdeen Centre that started on Tuesday and runs to Thursday (Sept. 12).
There are free food samples and a chance to win prizes with the purchase of products during the event.
The Taiwan Trade Centre Vancouver branch organized the 2024 Taiwan Food Pop-up Shop event as part of Taiwan's effort to build economic connections in the Canadian food industry.
Canada is one of the top 10 export destinations Taiwan is looking to build economic ties with in the food industry, according to Rachel Lu, deputy executive director of marketing with the Taiwan External Trade Development Council.
"Canada is an immigration country, meaning it is a multicultural country with a diverse and international food industry," said Lu.
"Vancouver and Richmond are main areas where Asian people live and because of the culture and background connections, we believe it is an easier way to introduce Taiwanese businesses to the local market."
She added the event is part of a campaign by the Taiwanese government to help more small and medium-sized companies expand internationally.
Taiwan is an agricultural country specializing in various food ingredients as well as being known for its "good manufacturing capabilities" in the food industry, according to Lu.
"Delicious, safe and healthy food is the main goal, and we think this paired with our manufacturing capabilities can introduce more food options for people in Canada," said Lu.
