A Richmond contractor was fined for failing to provide adequate training and having an unsafe excavation worksite.

Workers for a Richmond contractor were caught working in an excavation with "near vertical sides," netting the company a $3,856.85 fine.

A WorkSafeBC inspection at a sewage line upgrade site found two Stoddard Contracting Ltd. workers conducting excavation work in unsafe conditions.

The sides of the excavation were not shored, benched or supported and no engineering report was available for the excavation, according to WorkSafeBC.

It found Stoddard Contracting had committed a "high-risk" violation when it failed to make sure the sides of an excavation more than 1.2 metres in depth were in a condition as specified by a professional engineer.

The regulator added the contractor failed to provide the necessary training and supervision to workers and both violations were repeated.

WorkSafeBC imposed the fine on Stoddard Contracting on Sept. 1, 2023.
