The Great Little Box Company and RecycleSmart, both based in Richmond, have been named to the 2022 BC Top Employer list.

Two Richmond companies have earned accolades for being a couple of the best places to work in B.C.

RecycleSmart and the Great Little Box Company (GLBC) have both been named to the 2022 BC Top Employer list.

This is the 17th time that GLBC, headquartered on Mitchell Island, has been recognized as a top employer on the annual list, compiled by the editors of Canada’s Top 100.

This year, the company was added to the list for introducing staggered employee shifts early in the COVID-19 pandemic and onsite safety protocols – including constructing an additional lunch room and washroom facilities for employees. The company also matches RSP contributions and each month presents an excellence award to two top-performing employees, which includes a $500 donation to their charity of choice. GLBC also encourages employee volunteerism with paid time off.

“We are honoured to receive this reward and strongly believe that putting our employees first through providing a safe, secure, rewarding and fun environment is key to our current and future success,” said Christine Tindall, vice president of human resources of GLBC, in a statement.

GBLC, which was founded 40 years ago, manufactures and supplies packaging and labels, specializing in, for example, corrugated boxes, custom displays, flexible and protective packaging and shipping supplies.

Richmond-based RecycleSmart was also numbered among the province’s top employers for its maternity and parental leave policies, ongoing professional development with tuition and professional accreditation subsidies and helping employees stay connected over the past year.

RecycleSmart, on Shellbridge Way near Shell Road, has also been named to the inaugural New Innovators list, by Canadian Business and the Brookfield Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The list recognizes 50 Canadian companies for their innovation with products and services, progressive leadership and social and environmental initiatives.

“I have so many reasons to be proud of the RecycleSmart team,” said CEO Rob Duthie, in a statement. “These awards recognize the innovation and passion that this team brings to work every day from coast to coast. The purpose-driven growth culture we have built and the many successes we’ve achieved is because everyone contributes and plays their part.”

RecycleSmart develops and operates cloud-based, smart waste systems. The company installs small sensors in dumpster and recycling bins, which track how many recyclables or how much waste is in the container, how that amount changes over time and when it’s time to pick up the container. The sensor then reports this information to the RecycleSmart’s clients, which range from local independent businesses to Fortune 500 companies.
