Richmond-headquartered Nature’s Path Foods Inc. has earned the distinction of becoming Canada’s first and only cereal producer to be certified as a zero waste manufacturer. The certification comes from

the Zero Waste Business Council in the U.S. and focuses on two of the company’s plants – one in Delta, which is home for its Que Pasa Mexican Foods brand, and the other in Blaine, Washington. According to Nature’s Path, both of those locations currently divert 95 per cent of waste from landfills which is achieved through recycling and composting, for a combined total of 2,875 tons each year. That’s the equivalent of 1,643 midsize cars or 14 blue whales. The efforts surpass the criteria of diverting 90 per cent of waste. A third plant, in Sussex, Wisconsin, is also on track to become zero waste certified by the end of 2016.
