K-Pop dance competition at Richmond mall promises $500 cash prize

The two-day KPOP Festival is being held at Aberdeen Square next weekend.

Dancers and K-Pop enthusiasts will gather at Aberdeen Square next weekend to compete and bond over their shared passion – K-Pop.

The KPOP Festival organized by Aberdeen Square will kick off with a dance competition on July 30, which includes an online dance video submission component and an in-person competition. Solo acts and groups are welcome, and the winner will receive $500 as well as a trophy.

The festivities will then continue on July 31, with a random play dance and a lucky draw.

Like the rest of the world, many K-Pop fans in Metro Vancouver were left feeling isolated during the Covid-19 pandemic. Now that restrictions have been lifted, fans are eager to connect in person again.

And the return of K-Pop concerts to the city, including upcoming shows for Seventeen, JUNNYSunmi, and GOT7’s Mark Tuan, is also rejuvenating the community.

The KPOP Festival will be held at Aberdeen Square by the Aberdeen Sky Train station from 1 p.m. on July 30 and 31.

Details and registration instructions for the competition are available on Eventbrite.
