Where to recycle those candy wrappers, dispose of pumpkins in Richmond

The trick-or-treaters have left, the candy rush has subsided and the costumes are ready to be put away. With Halloween over, it’s time to consider what to do with that mountain of candy wrappers and those soon-to-decay jack-o-lanterns.

Candy wrappers

Did you know you don’t need to toss leftover candy wrappers in the garbage bin in Richmond? In fact, the city now accepts flexible packaging at its recycling depot.

Currently, these items must be kept separate from rigid plastic packaging and containers as they are not accepted in curbside collection. However, flexible packaging can be collected at Richmond’s Recycling Depot (5555 Lynas Lane).

Additionally, London Drugs is running the first-ever Halloween candy wrapper recycling drive in B.C. as part of its own other flexible plastic packaging recycling program.

“We want to help British Columbians celebrate Halloween with a bit less waste by making one simple suggestion: instead of throwing out your candy wrappers and chip bags, bring them to London Drugs for recycling,” said Maury McCausland, retail operations sustainability specialist for London Drugs in a press release.

Customers can bring their wrappers to any London Drugs location, including the two in Richmond (11666 Steveston Hwy or 5971 No 3 Rd).

Pumpkins

Of course, pumpkins can be composted in your green bin. Just make sure to remove and candles or plastic beforehand.

However, if you’re looking to give your pumpkin a proper send off, join some off-duty firefighters for the Firehall Pumpkin Drop on Saturday.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. bring your retired jack-o-lanterns to Firehall No. 2 (11011 No. 2 Rd.) where you can “watch your pumpkins explode” and help raise funds for The Richmond Firefighters Charitable Society.
