Use your exterior to rejuvenate your interior

Spring is about new beginnings, which means it's also a great time to brighten up your home décor by adding sunshine colours.

Spring is about new beginnings, which means it's also a great time to brighten up your home décor by adding sunshine colours.

According to Shelagh Anderson, proprietor of Lofty Living, nothing lightens up a home more than white with splashes of colour, whether it be bathroom towels or a lamp shade.

"Also, a large white bowl of lemons can bring instant and simple spring style into any kitchen," said the interior decorator. "In the bedroom, change your duvet cover to a more colourful one and you instantly bring a fresh new look."

She said there are many simple and inexpensive accents to spring up your décor. "Perk up your pillows and walls with pops of colour, patterns or floral motifs. Coral décor accents are also a great way to bring the beach into our homes.

"Even papering a small area like the back of book shelves or a bathroom feature wall will pack a punch."

One of the easiest ways interior designer Huong Nguyen knows to give your home a new look is to put away darker-toned throw pillows and replace them with brighter ones.

"This year's 'it' colour is in the tangerine family, honeysuckle to be specific," said the owner of The Spotted Frog Furniture Company.

"You can pair the coral tone with the new neutrals, grey."

Nguyen said hues in nature, such as the blues, especially turquoise-blue, and greens, are always perennial favourites.

Spring is about blurring the line between indoors and outdoors. Think reclaimed wood, the vintage look - raw, edgy and rugged.

"For some great spring ideas, visit www.houzz.com," said the seasoned decorator.

"Adding pops of spring can be as easy as taking plants, driftwood and spindles and placing them on a tray on your coffee table."

Over at Pieces Giftware, owner David Gordon, agreed that spring décor gets its muse from nature and our nostalgia for the past.

He said white candles in a cluster of three with bits of driftwood or seashells can get your table in spring mode.

"What's really indicative of Steveston is the nautical look. You can instantly bring spring into your home by mixing nautical things such as a starfish or shells in a glass bowl or urn."

A hot trend in the kitchen is the farm/country look.

"There are wooden signs with galvanized metal and barn motif that are really hot," Gordon said.

The season's brightly hued dishes for your indoor or your outdoor entertaining also celebrate spring.

"There are condiment holders and even French fry holders out there to spruce up your barbecue," he added.

Our need to get back to basics is also fuelling a resurgence in floral patterns, seen in everything from draperies to napkins, to dishes and cushions.

"If you follow spring fashion shows, you'll notice that floral motifs are the big rage," Gordon said. "They've been modernized and reinvented, and they look great."

Nikaido's Joseph Cocker and his wife Sara have brought touches of spring into their Japanese-inspired giftware shop on Moncton. The boutique is filled with inspiration.

Teacups filled with candles, plants or flowers can give you a beautiful spring centerpiece, said Cocker.

There is also the Rolls Royce of teacups, Wedgewood bone China, which is bringing back it's winning traditional patterns and giving them a new look.

"Wedgewood has enlarged some patterns, such as the Butterfly Bloom, then they cut them up and put them back together completely randomly to create modern new designs."

As far as getting back to nature this spring, a selection of various rustic wood frames in a grouping can give that "wow" factor to your walls, he added.

No matter what your décor style is, take a walk in nature and you are sure to be moved to go home and redecorate.
