The days of experiencing books as just paper and ink are certainly changing and now, an event at the Richmond Public Library later this month can even help you experience a book in virtual reality.

On Sunday June 24, Vancouver-based artist Sean Karemaker will share his work where he creates intricate drawings on long scrolls which he then incorporates into virtual reality for viewers to experience as they were created.

According the library, Karemaker pushes the boundaries of graphic novels through his creations and his format of a scroll allows him to explore time and space, reality, fantasy and memory.

Karemaker will share his work titled “Feast of Fields,” which is a graphic novel that references the picnics that Karemaker used to go on with his mother in his elementary school years.

It is also a graphic biography of his mother who grew up in an orphanage in Denmark. The book switches between the troubled childhood of Karemaker’s mother and his own recount of his life in the 1990s in BC.

Attend this free event from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Brighouse library branch to watch Karemaker’s story come to life and try a hand at drawing on a scroll.
