Do you support housing homeless people on Elmbridge Way?

BC Housing and the City of Richmond are proposing to build 40 units of modular housing on Elmbridge Way. Here is how some Richmond residents responded to the Richmond News question: Do you support housing homeless people on Elmbridge Way? See photos below:

Ricardo Decicco - bus driver - "I’m in favour of it. Richmond needs more of this type of development; there’s just a lot of homeless people here. Working the graveyard shift (at a nearby hotel) I notice a lot of homeless people in the area; there’s just not enough shelters...I wouldn’t say that it will contribute [to more crime]."

Leo Chan - tile installer - "I think every city needs a shelter for homeless people but the location they chose is a bad idea, I think. They could have chosen a better place. Of course homeless people need help and it doesn’t mean we don’t like to help them, it just means it’s the wrong location at the wrong time."

Josh Woo - retired - "It’s good for helping out the poor people. It’s a good idea. The problem is the property is in the wrong location. There are two big high-rise buildings there. Some of them are more than one million [dollars]. People say all the poor people bring crime — I don’t think so. But one thing, it’s the wrong location. "

Sean Bromilow - "Without knowing the specifics, I would give it a gentle yes. In general, I support an increase in social housing and affordable housing in the Lower Mainland — it’s wildly unaffordable and there are a lot of people who need it."

James Huo - stock trader - "I think I would. I don’t think there’s any other place for homeless people. I think this is a good way to allow them to have a place to just live. Sometimes the weather can be extreme. And since they actually have an address now, it could be easier for them to get jobs. That can benefit the city."
