Ten new banners designed by Richmond residents will brighten up local streets.
The winners of the City of Richmond's annual Street Banner contest were revealed during Monday's city council meeting, each representing a different theme.
The 10 winning designs will be displayed in the Richmond city hall atrium from now until May 31.
“Richmond is proud to support a robust and active artistic community. This annual contest is yet another way of sharing that creativity on our streets,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.
“Community engagement and the arts are important to council and this contest helps to connect residents with the many beautiful elements that make our city a go-to destination.”
A total of 360 designs were submitted after the contest opened for submissions in August 2023 and they were shortlisted to 20 entries by a judging panel made up of community members.
The 10 winners were then chosen by a vote on the Let's Talk Richmond website. The voting period was open for two weeks and 6,600 votes were cast.
All 2024 submissions will be available for viewing on the city's street banner program website. Community members can also purchase street banners and reusable banner bags from previous years from Richmond Nature Park.
The winners for each theme are:
- Active living: Clare Scott
- Community: Allisa Ritchie
- Connection: Kaiden Bjerke
- Culture and heritage: Yanqiu Cheng
- Island city: Lisa Toffolo
- Nature: Brett Whitelaw
- Sustainability: Lisa Craker
