VanCity grant helps grow Sharing Farm

The Sharing Farm received a $75,000 grant from VanCity's enviroFund to improve the farm's infrastructure and capabilities.

The Sharing Farm received a $75,000 grant from VanCity's enviroFund to improve the farm's infrastructure and capabilities.

The grant, which is the largest in the farm's history, will be used to renovate and expand existing buildings to create a hub for resources, education and facilities for urban farmers and the community.

One component of the grant will transform the farm's orchard into a "food forest" and will develop a seedling production greenhouse.

Due to these projects, the Sharing Farm can expand its ability to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to Richmond residents in need served by the Food Bank and community meal programs.

The improvements also form the next step in the farm's evolution towards a sustainable food system centre for the community.

"The enviroFund grant will allow us to innovate in orchard permaculture, increase our yields while reducing wasted crops and to save the seeds that are so suited to our particular climate," said Arzeena Hamir, the farm's past co-chair.

The Sharing Farm Society is a charitable non-profit dedicated to providing the Richmond Food Bank and community meals with fresh, local, organically grown fruits and vegetables.
