Steveston's Gulf of Georgia Cannery unveils new historical artifact exhibit

Cannery REcollections opens May 10, bringing together community-curated artifacts and personal narratives at the Richmond landmark.

A two-year exhibit blending historical artifacts, community-curated displays and interactive storytelling is launching in Steveston this weekend.

Cannery REcollections, presented by the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, opens May 10 and will run until spring 2027 at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site.

Artifacts and artworks will be featured throughout the site's Feature Exhibit Gallery, with a focus on themes of memory and storytelling.

Historical objects will serve as an entry point for conversations about personal and collective memories they hold, beyond their practical uses.

"Visitors will be invited to explore these connections and feel inspired to think about their own connections to objects and history – whether through family heirlooms, everyday items or places of personal significance," according to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society.

The exhibit will also include a community curation section featuring objects from the Cannery's collection, selected by local residents.

Selections are based on community members' perspectives on which pieces hold meaningful stories or represent important moments.

The society said the community-curated perspective creates a "sense of belonging and connection" through a hands-on experience.

Elizabeth Batista, executive director at Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, said it is thanks to their collections and exhibits manager Heidi Rampfl, cannery staff, volunteers, board of directors and residents who shared their stories and historical pieces that the exhibit can take place.

"Their generosity and enthusiasm have allowed us to celebrate the legacy of the Cannery and its place in our collective memory," said Batista.

"This exhibit not only tells a living, breathing story but also honours the community’s deep connection to this important part of Canada’s heritage."
