A kids' bike and Canada Day parades are once again kicking off this year's Steveston Salmon Festival next week.
The Salmon Festival is one of Canada's longest-running community events and is celebrating its 78th year with food, music and performances all day long across Steveston Village on July 1.
A pancake breakfast will serve food at 8 a.m. in the Steveston Community Centre parking lot, with the kids' bike parade starting at 9:30 a.m. and the official Canada Day parade starting at 10 a.m. from Garry Point Park and ending at Moncton Street and Railway Avenue.
Something new this year at the Salmon festivall will be The RoadShow, a custom 34-foot trailer with simulators of heavy equipment.
The simulators and virtual reality will let people test drive what it's like to drive highway maintenance and road-building vehicles in B.C.
Visitors can find the trailer on First Avenue, south of Moncton Street, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Food is a huge highlight of the festival, with the annual Salmon Bake and Japanese-Canadian chow mein both being sold, as well as food trucks.
Two music zones will have live performances from noon to 7 p.m. featuring Ten Souljers and Aristo-Crats, along with the iconic Canadian dance band Dr. Strangelove.
Dance troupe The Lolas and other performers like jugglers and stilt walkers will be around the village the entire day.
Festival goers can also expect the Japanese Cultural Show, Sammy's Fun Zone with face painting, interactive games and button making as well as a youth zone with music and games.
Local artists will also be showcasing their work at an art show while programs and exhibits will be open to the public at the Steveston Museum and Post Office, the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery.
The event is presented by the City of Richmond, Steveston Community Society and Richmond Agricultural and Industrial Society.
