Some Richmond sidewalks remain covered in snow due to ‘challenging’ weather conditions

ALR properties and religious institutions are exempt from bylaw obligations to clear snowy sidewalks.

Community members and city crews were spotted around the city clearing sidewalks.

Some areas of Richmond are still under a thick blanket of snow, and they might stay that way a little longer as city staff work down the priority list.

Residents and city staff have been shovelling sidewalks throughout the city for the past couple of days, but areas such as the Highway to Heaven on No. 5 Road have remained snowy.

The area is populated by ALR properties and properties zoned for assembly, such as churches, and, according to city spokesperson Clay Adams, such properties are exempt from bylaw requirements to clear the sidewalks.

As such, the responsibility to clear the sidewalks falls on the city when occupants of certain sections are unable to get it done.

According to Adams, city crews started clearing public sidewalks and paths on Wednesday morning and continued to salt and clean throughout Thursday.

Despite crews working around the clock, the “huge volume of snow” has made clearing roads more time-consuming.

“It has been a challenging weather situation these past few days, but crews continue to work through the various locations to remove snow and ice as quickly as they can,” said Adams.
