A nature conservation project which kicked off in Richmond three years ago has won a Canadian Museum of Nature award.

The Butterflyway Project, launched by the David Suzuki Foundation, picked up the Nature Inspiration Award for a non-profit organization.

Richmond was the first city in the region to get a “butterflyway,” a dedicated area to create local wildflower, plant and shrub patches that provide food and shelter for butterflies, which are vital to the ecosystem.

Richmond’s 23 butterflyways were created by and monitored by hundreds of “butterflyway rangers, helping provide a habitat for urban pollinators.
