Looking to make a connection with fellow ham radio operators during the annual Field Day emergency exercise on June 25 and 26 at Garry Point Park are Richmond Amateur Radio Club members (from left to right) Urey Chan, Charles Cohen and Eric Scott.

The second annual event that brings together Richmond’s radio enthusiasts takes place this Saturday morning.

The Swap Meet and Emergency Communications Display, hosted by Richmond Amateur Radio Club, kicks off at 9 a.m. at South Arm United Church.

Like-minded radio and emergency communication buffs from across the Lower Mainland will converge for a few hours at the church on Saturday to promote emergency preparedness to the community.

According to the club, two “interesting communications vehicle displays are new to this year’s event,” including the Community Emergency Response Vehicle (CERV) from Vancouver Emergency Community Telecommunications Organization (VECTOR) and a radio communications vehicle from 39 Service Battalion of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Other municipalities to be represented at the event are: Abbotsford (AARESS), Surrey, (SEPARS), Burnaby, Delta and Langley City.

“The annual RARC event aims to promote awareness of amateur radio’s involvement in emergency communications…in our community and emergency preparedness,” said Urey Chan, the event’s organizer and president of the radio club.

“Cooperation, collaboration and coordination are key elements for an efficient and effective plan to involve amateur radio in emergency communications preparedness.”

Additional information and updates on the event are posted online at RichmondARC.ca.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church on 11051 No. 3 Rd.
