A native of Richmond graduated last week as valedictorian from her class at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax (MSVU).
Alexandra Bromley, an alumnus of McMath secondary, made her speech at a ceremony last week, after graduating with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Human Nutrition.
And this fall, Bromley will start the next step in her journey, with a Master of Science in the same subject.
Previously, she studied psychology at UBC’s Okanagan campus from 2011 to 2013, before transferring to study the same subject at Dalhousie University.
She told how her arrival at MSVU was a “happy accident” after moving to the province to study at Dalhousie.
“I had never even heard of MSVU. After my first degree, I worked in a group home for adults with intellectual disabilities,” Bromley recalled.
“I started to recognize the importance of nutrition on both mental and physical health. It was also during this time that I became vegan, which also increased my interest in food. Both of these led me to study nutrition.”
Prior to the pandemic, Bromley was heavily involved with the Breakfast Program Association, where she recruited, scheduled and trained volunteers to make breakfasts for three grade schools.
And while at MSVU, she conducted two research studies, the first was a directed study on restrictive eating and dietary patterns of older adults, while the second was on the role of added sugar on the sensory perception of yogurt in children.
