To kick off its 2021 fundraising campaign, the Richmond Christmas Fund has launched an online 50/50 raffle, called ‘Santa in the Summer.’

A Richmond non-profit organization is hosting its first online raffle to get an early start on its fundraising campaign this year.

Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG) launched a new initiative called “Santa in the Summer” – an online 50-50 raffle.

Proceeds from the campaign will support the Richmond Christmas Fund’s work during the holiday season when the program provides low-income residents with grocery vouchers, toys, books and gift cards.

Santa in the Summer has over 4,700 tickets available for purchase and the winner could receive upwards of $10,000 for the prize.

Ed Gavsie, CEO of RCRG, said the many families are still recovering from the economic impact and have decided to start raising money early so that they can “be there for our neighbours in need” during the holiday season.

“Last year, with strong health and safety measures in place, we supported as many people as we could,” said Gavsie.

“As restrictions are relaxed, however, more people will be able to access the Christmas Fund, and we’re preparing to meet that need.”

In 2020, the Christmas Fund helped nearly 3,000 Richmond resident which included more than 1,100 children and youth.

According to RCRG, the program anticipates an even higher number this year as public health restrictions begin to ease.

Raffle tickets are open to anyone in B.C. and can be purchased until midnight on August 31. The raffle draw will take place at 3 p.m. on September 2.
