Photos: Herring Sale for autism raises nearly $35,000

Funds to support online information and training to families in B.C.

Oceanside Fisheries and the Steveston Harbour Authority held another “successful” herring sale to benefit Autism Community Training (ACT) on Saturday, according to one of its organizers.

This year is their fourth annual fundraiser and to adapt to pandemic restrictions, the fundraiser was held in a drive-through fashion.

A total of 33,000 pounds of bagged herrings were ordered and placed into customers’ trunks which raised nearly $35,000.

According to Deborah Pugh, executive director at ACT, the fundraiser nearly doubled what was earned last year because of “an excellent herring catch.”

“We are very grateful for the financial support of all our donors and customers who made our fourth Annual Herring event so successful,” said Pugh.

“Our volunteers were amazing – many were family members and community professionals who know how important our work is.”

The fundraiser supports ACT’s online resources, which the organization has been offering families with autism since 2011.

“Usage of ACT’s online resources is up 40 per cent over the last year, and we are stretched to keep up with the resources families need,” Pugh added.

The funds will be used to support free online information and training to families in B.C.
