On Saturday, April 13, 84 young chess players, ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 9, participated in the 9th annual Kiwanis Scholastic Chess Tournament, held at City Centre Community Centre.
The event was free to all players, courtesy of the Kiwanis Club and registration and tournament details were handled by Chess2Inspire, a local chess organization that encourages young people to learn how to play and participate in chess.
The Kiwanis Club of Richmond is part of an international organization of service clubs, and sponsors many local events throughout the year.
These include donating funds to many worthy organizations during the holiday season, sponsoring one or more low-income students to attend the RCMP Youth Police Academy in the spring, awarding a scholarship to a deserving high school student, presenting Hope of Canada awards to graduating elementary students at four different elementary schools, and other causes.
The clubs main fundraiser is a golf tournament held every summer for the last 21 years. This year it will be Sunday, August 25 at Country Meadows Golf Course.
In addition, through its affiliated housing society, Kiwanis owns Kiwanis Towers, which provides below-market rental accommodation to low-income seniors.
The club and housing society would welcome more community-minded volunteers to help with their many activities.
