Out and About: Snow creates beautiful scenes in Richmond

Snowiest day in Richmond since 1996 gave students some free time last week.

It was quite a weather week!

First came the extreme cold.

This was followed by the second snowiest day ever recorded in January —  27 centimetres at the airport!

And it was also our snowiest day in Richmond since Dec. 29, 1996.

Then came a bit more snow, a short period of freezing rain, then fog, then – thankfully – a slow warming trend and light rain to start washing away the accumulation of snow.

It seemed fitting to walk about and record images of the different ways that the snow and other weather events changed our landscapes and the different responses that people had to the dump of snow and its allied weather forces.

The good news was that most people drove carefully and respectfully and the “snow holidays” for schools made for a quieter morning rush hour for people who had to go to work.

And this week’s weather will probably help us to (sort of) appreciate winter rains.
