Out and About: Recycling - the greening of garbage

Regular contributor Grant McMillan was impressed by the City of Richmond's recycling facility.

I had some things to dispose of — cardboard boxes, glass bottles, mixed plastic and plastic bottles.

Not too many years ago, these items would have ended up in the landfill.

In many countries, they still would be contributing to mountains of garbage.

The recycling depot of Richmond is an eye opener for those who are sceptical about government services.

It operates as a well-designed, well-managed enterprise, with friendly and knowledgeable staff to help you find the proper recycling containers.  It is open seven days a week.

And the service is free — already paid for by our taxes.

The depot was upgraded in 2020 to make it more user friendly and to include more recycling services.

It can handle a wide range of recycling — hazardous waste, scrap metal, large appliances, batteries, light bulbs, Styrofoam and flexible plastics, among many more materials.

Well worth checking out if you have not used it recently — or ever.
