With summer just a week away Richmond just put on some sporty shades as it opened two public beach volleyball courts at the Olympic Oval Sunday afternoon.

The courts are complimented by stepped seating in front of the Oval building, as well as a new lawn and child's play area as part of a waterfront transformation for the north riverside plaza.

The Oval has provided volleyball nets and the courts may be used by anyone from 8 a.m. until dusk save for when someone has exclusively rented them for $15 per hour. By comparison Vancouver's beach volleyball courts can be rented for $5.29, with special non-profit rates.

Beach Volleyball Oval
Beach volleyball courts opened to the public at the Richmond Olympic Oval on June 14, 2015.

"The courts may be used on occasion for exclusive rentals, programming or competitions and we wouldn’t want a group coming down to the Oval beach only to be disappointed that it is already being used by a group," explained program manager Aran Kay.

Volleyball equipment is not provided and the net height is locked at 2.24 metres.

A few basic rules do apply, such as no pets, food and alcoholic beverages being allowed on the courts and playing time should be limited to 60 minutes when others are waiting.
