This summer, six Hugh Boyd secondary students will head to Africa on a humanitarian journey. On Aug. 14, student volunteers will travel to the South African orphanage called Refilwe.

Emily Carr University student Jeremy Lee, who will be documenting the trip, will join Richmond's Delaney Lee, Max Tagesen, Shaane Nathu, Dini Van Eck, and Sydney Vasquez on this important trip.

Richmondites can help these caring teens by attending Voices for Refilwe, a fundraising concert, on Aug. 12 at Richmond City Hall.

Accompanying these students are Boyd teachers Donna Kwan and Michael Jaswal, along with Magdalen Leung, on behalf of the Richmond Sunset Rotary Club.

During the trip the students will help set up the newly built kitchen and two classrooms.

"It is vital for students today to be conscious of the conditions that our friends are growing up in," said former student volunteer, Keefer Pelech. "These volunteers are going to work, play, and build long-lasting connections with the children of Refilwe."

The students have been fundraising all year long to save money to help them get there. Previous fundraisers include bake sales, car washes, and even a garage sale.

The students also sold Stella and Dot jewelry, advertised at local malls, and hosted a pub night with a silent auction at Legends Pub. The most recent benefit was a barbecue.

This is the last fundraiser before the Hugh Boyd students leave on their humanitarian journey.

The student volunteers present Voices for Refilwe, a music concert on Friday, Aug. 12 at 7 to 9 p.m. at Richmond City Hall. The concert will feature performances by local musicians Lou and the Witch Baby, Chelsea and Spenser Lee, Noah Verheyen, Ivy Fernando, and Paull Verheyen. Doors open at 6: 30 p.m. Tickets costs $25.
