Community Basics for Babies pulls heartstrings

The mere mention of Christmas brings to mind eye-popping gifts, delicious foods and caring for each other.

The mere mention of Christmas brings to mind eye-popping gifts, delicious foods and caring for each other.

Richmond's Thompson Community Centre is combining it all by putting on a fundraiser in order to provide families in need with baby foods, lightly used clothing, toys and more.

Through the initiative, the centre is supporting JRfm's Basics for Babies, a partnership with the Lower Mainland Food Banks to assist them in helping the tiniest in need.

While brainstorming on a suitable fundraiser, "we felt this (cause) was the best way to impact our local community," said Aila Morris, recreation leader at Thompson Community Centre.

While part of the proceeds goes directly to Richmond Food Bank, Richmond High's Colts That Care has been included as an additional recipient. The community centre accepts a wide range of donations, including jarred baby foods, formula, diapers, books and cash. Staff has also been selling T-shirts.

Against all expectations, the response from the community has been overwhelming, said Morris. "I estimate we have like 15 to 20 average sized boxes with everything on the list. People have been very supportive; it's exciting we're going to be able to help a lot of people. We're really appreciative of the community coming together and helping other families."

In an attempt to explain the fundraiser's success, Morris referred to the sense of kindness the holiday season evokes.

"I think this time of year, people like to support families in need. It's also something that is close to home, so I guess it touches them because it's local."

With the final day approaching Dec. 13, the community centre hopes for one last push. "Our goal is to reach 25 boxes we're able to donate. Up until now, we have sold about 50 T-shirts, and we'd like to push for 25 more," said Morris.

There is something in it for Richmond as well: the community that raises the highest and largest amount of donations will be rewarded with a free concert.
