The city is calling all artists, as well as cultural and historic institutions, to throw open their doors to help showcase Richmond's creative side over the May 4, 5 weekend.
Applications are currently being accepted for Doors Open Richmond 2013, with a deadline set for Friday, Feb. 15. Only 50 participants will be selected once an assessment by a Doors Open Richmond review panel is completed.
In order to meet the criteria, local arts, culture, religious or heritage venues must provide free admission to the public, remain open between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on designated Doors Open dates, possess sites of architectural, historic, social or cultural note or be an artist's studio, and enhance the public's knowledge of the city.
Moreover, participation requires a nominal fee of $20 per individual or $50 per organization, yet unsuccessful applicants will receive a full refund.
Those who are selected will be mentioned prominently in Doors Open promotional materials distributed throughout the city, and at the same time create a stronger bond with the community that serves as their base.
In particular, Doors Open has attracted a significant amount of residents in and outside of Richmond over the past
five years. Last year alone, the event brought 18,000 visitors out to selected sites, including cultural and historic facilities, museums and parks.
Aside from opening their doors for free, participating individuals or organizations also provide free specialty programs and behind-the-scenes-tours to enhance the public's experience and understanding.
This year, the event will kick off with a special celebration on Friday, May 3 at 6 p.m.
An evening of music, heritage and performance is planned for the public to enjoy at the newly constructed No. 1220 Interurban Tram Building, located at the corner of No. 1 Rd. and Moncton Ave. in Steveston.
