Richmond will join communities across Canada on Monday, Oct. 1 to recognize National Seniors Day.

The day celebrates and recognizes the contributions our older adults make to better our communities, families, and workplaces.

According to Statistics Canada, people in Richmond have the greatest life expectancy in the country. Richmond residents are therefore living an average of 84.9 years, almost four years longer than the national average of 81.2.

And on Oct. 1, several Richmond facilities will be showing their appreciation to older adults with a variety of special incentives including:

? Minoru Place Activity Centre is offering Be a Member for a Day and Bring a Friend to registered programs from 8: 30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Enjoy access to Minoru clubs and groups as well as member pricing in the cafeteria. Those already registered in a program can bring a friend for free, if space permits.

? Steveston Community Centre is offering free refreshments on Oct. 1 from 1-4 p.m. at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre.

Participants must be aged 55 or older.

"Older adults play an essential role in all our lives," said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

"In our community, they are parents, grandparents, coworkers, business owners, volunteers, mentors, teachers and our neighbours.

"And as our older adult population grows in proportion to the rest of our population, the city is working to respond to their needs for today and in the future."
