Banana bread or zumba? You decide...

...Richmond student club hosting dance night, with baking on the side in aid of Ugandan children

Banana bread and a zumba dance night are not usually found on the same bill.

But that’s exactly what the 100-strong McMath Interact Club is doing next Wednesday, Nov. 25, all in aid of a charity in Uganda for impoverished children, called Jaaja Barb’s Home of Angels.

The student club picks a project every month in an effort to “make a difference” and this month they’ve been baking banana bread and busy organizing the zumba night to raise as much money as possible for the charity, which is run locally.

“The club has been helping this charity for a while now,” said Mila Melanidis, a Grade 12 student at McMath secondary and social chair of the club.

“They’re trying to build another room onto the house, so that’s what we’re helping with,” she added.

Some of the members got stuck into the mixing bowl last weekend and have been baking up a storm, with the bread on sale at the school and at the zumba night.

The zumba night, being organized by club member Nicole Gustavsson, runs from 7 - 8 p.m. at the school on Garry Street, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10, at the door and by emailing [email protected].

Raffle baskets will also be on sale to support Jaaja Barb’s Home of Angels, which is the brainchild of B.C. resident Barb Giraud.
