Homicide investigators identify Surrey man killed in targeted shooting

A 30-year-old man is dead and a taxi driver is in hospital with serious injuries following a shooting in the Guildford area.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has identified the victim of a daytime targeted shooting in Surrey's Guildford neighbourhood on Tuesday.

Surrey RCMP say they received reports of shots fired at a taxi in a parking lot in the 14800-block 108 Avenue around 2:20 p.m.

When police arrived they found both occupants in the vehicle had been shot: a 30-year-old man, who died, and the driver. The taxi driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The deceased, 30-year-old David Chavez-Jara of Surrey, was known to police. IHIT says he was recently convicted of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

“Investigators believe Chavez-Jara was the target of this senseless act,” says IHIT's Sgt. Timothy Pierotti in a statement.

“IHIT is committed to working with our law enforcement partners as well as partners in the community to find those responsible and hold them accountable before they can hurt others.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-448 or email ihittipline@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
