The start of the nominations period for the Premier’s Awards for Excellence in Education coincides with the 27th annual World Teachers’ Day.

With this Tuesday (Oct. 5) marking the 27th annual World Teacher’s Day, British Columbians can now nominate exceptional education professionals for the province’s top teacher award.

The Premier’s Awards for Excellence in Education doesn’t only honour teachers but support staff, administrators and school district leaders who have made outstanding contributions to their students and school communities. Nominations can be made under community engagement, extracurricular leadership, Indigenous education, outstanding new teacher, outstanding team collaboration, and social equity and diversity.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers, support staff and administrators have worked tirelessly to ensure students stay safe and healthy during these unprecedented times,”  said Premier John Horgan in a recent statement. “These awards allow us to celebrate education professionals who have gone above and beyond in classrooms and schools across the province.”

Finalists will be announced in February and winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Victoria in April. Award winners will receive a $3,000 bursary for professional learning, and $2,000 toward their school community for professional learning. Each runner-up will receive a $1,000 bursary and another $1,000 to  contribute to their school.

“Whether you are a teacher, school staff member, student, or parent, the pandemic has challenged us all in many different ways,” said Teri Mooring, president of the BC Teachers’ Federation. “Through it all, teachers have been there with heart and professionalism to make sure every student feels supported and valued.”

Nominations will be accepted until Jan. 7, 2022. All previously submitted nominations from the 2020 awards program, which was postponed due to the pandemic, will be included in the 2021 submissions.
