Ava Choy grew up in East Vancouver, according to her obituary, and was passionate about physical activity and fitness throughout her life.

A GoFundMe has been set up in the wake of a tragic death at the Okanagan Granfondo in Penticton this month, identifying the victim.

On July 13, while on the route of the annual cycling competition, a woman was struck by a vehicle and killed on White Lake Road south of the city.

Family on social media and in the GoFundMe, as well as on a public memorial page, have identified the woman as Ava Choy, a Lower Mainland woman born in 1976.

"Ava was doing something she loved — riding her bike amongst a community of cyclists who shared her passion. She had a deep love for being physically active, a soul drawn to the beauty and peace of Hawaii, and a heart committed to helping others through countless hours of volunteering," reads the GoFundMe.

"Her determination, energy, and generosity touched so many lives. Ava was small in stature, but mighty in spirit. She was a ‘fire dragon’ through and through."

Ava was struck alongside two other cyclists, who were seriously injured and taken to hospital.

The GoFundMe's stated intention is to provide financial support to the family as they navigate the costs of her funeral arrangements.

"Ava’s life was taken far too soon. Her passing was unexpected and has left our family in deep shock and sorrow," reads the GoFundMe, which was organized by a family member.

"Losing someone so suddenly not only brings emotional pain, but financial strain as we navigate this heartbreaking chapter [...] Thank you for your kindness, your support, and your love."

RCMP are investigating the crash. Organizers from Okanagan Granfondo have offered their prayers, and their promises they are working with RCMP, as well as offering trauma assistance to participating cyclists.
