The story of Huawei executive Wanzhou Meng’s arrest at Vancouver International Airport has captured the world’s attention.

The Richmond News was one of the first to break the story, and we have continued our coverage this week. Some business people in Richmond are worried about escalating tensions between Canada and China, while some Chinese-language media outlets based in Richmond found links to their Huawei articles silenced by WeChat.  During this, Richmond MLA Teresa Wat has remained tight-lipped on the story surrounding the company she once toured on trade missions.

For this week’s Your Voice, the News asked: what do you think of Canada arresting Huawei’s CFO at YVR last week?

Kamper Chan

"I have heard of Huawei. It’s a big company. It is quite controversial because it is related to the U.S. law and the sanction was only put by the U.S., not the United Nation. So I’m not sure whether Meng should be sentenced."

Helen Lam

"I think our country, Canada, is fair. It should have a fair judgment."

Alan Sexauer

"I don't think that we should have intervened. Because it has nothing to do with us, as Canada."

Adam Qumizakis

"What does Canada have to do with it, though? I think they're just sucking up to Donald Trump, to be on good terms."

Liang Chen

"I think it’s wrong for them to arrest her. She is a Chinese citizen. Canada cannot arrest her based on its law, or American law. So it’s not right."
