Richmond community activist Henry Yao is running in the provincial election in Richmond South Centre as the NDP candidate.

Richmond city Coun. Alexa Loo announced earlier last week that she will run in the riding – long-time MLA Linda Reid, a BC Liberal, is not running for re-election.

Yao was born in Taiwan and is fluent in both English and Mandarin. He has lived in Richmond since 11 years of age. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology at the University of British Columbia.

Yao led one of Richmond’s largest youth volunteer programs and has worked for the Richmond Youth Service Agency, now called Connections Community Services.

“Our kids deserve an affordable, quality education that opens up opportunities for them,” Yao said.

“But under the BC Liberals, our kids were forgotten as they tripled tuition fees and cancelled needs-based grants for students who really needed them.

“John Horgan and the BC NDP are focused on creating more opportunities. It’s why we’ve funded over 27,000 apprenticeship and training seats in public and private institutions.”

Yao ran for city council in 2014 and 2018, but he lost in both elections.
