All About Steveston: Summer not dead in village just yet!

There are few things worse than the day after Labour Day. People exclaim, “summer is over!” and rush back to school and work. Personally, I don’t subscribe to such psychological warfare against the Earth’s orbit. Summer isn’t over until Sept.

There are few things worse than the day after Labour Day. People exclaim, “summer is over!” and rush back to school and work. Personally, I don’t subscribe to such psychological warfare against the Earth’s orbit. Summer isn’t over until Sept. 22 and there’s still lots to do in Steveston. Over the long weekend I moseyed around the village and did quite a few things that can still be done over the next few weeks:

Eat ice cream

It was nearly 30 degrees Celsius on Tuesday for crying out loud. Labour Day doesn’t mean all of a sudden you stop eating ice cream, or frozen yogurt.

Go swim

I hadn’t visited Steveston Pool in at least 20 years up until this summer. Some things never change, although I was shocked to be able to tippy toe around the deep end (1.83 metres). I’ll let you in on a secret: the pool remains open until Sept. 22, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. for lane swimming only. The kiddie pool is also open. Bring cash!

Walk Garry Point Park

September remains a hot month and hitting up the Point is still a fruitful adventure, especially to cool off with a nice breeze. And you can still get fish and chips and ice cream at the concession until 7 p.m. each day this month.

Fisherman’s Wharf

Go buy a wide variety of seafood items, with the exception of Fraser River sockeye salmon. Or not. At the least, you can strike up a conversation with fishers about what’s happening in our ocean. Pink salmon are still abundant but the prices are steeper than usual. Oh, and don’t feed the sea lions.

Last Market day

Sunday was the penultimate market day with Sept. 17 being the last of the season. The market this year was a bit smaller than usual but it’s still a great excuse to get into the village. Now that Costco has erected its fake Christmas trees, there are still lots of unique treats and crafts to be had for the upcoming gift-giving season.
