IKEA: Swedish for growth

Talks are back on between employees and management at the Richmond Ikea location where a labour dispute has been continued since May 2013.

Ikea Canada will be opening a new customer distribution centre in Richmond that will support 100 new jobs, with hiring set to begin this fall.

The 340,000-sq.-ft. centre will be located at 7031 York Rd. and is expected to open next spring.

“As Ikea continues to grow, we recognize the importance of making the shopping experience more convenient and enjoyable for Canadians,” said Ikea Canada President Marsha Smith in a news release.

“Building a stronger distribution network is one of the many ways we are ensuring we meet our customers’ expectations in western Canada.”

With an aim of shortening delivery times for customers, the distribution centre will process items from Ikea’s B.C. and Alberta stores.

And that footprint is about to grow as well, as Ikea recently announced it will double the number of stores it has in Canada over the next 10 years.

The Swedish retailer, which has been in Canada for 40 years, currently operates 12-full-sized retail locations across the country, including one in Richmond. It plans to have 24 stores up and running by 2025.

Ikea has 343 stores in more than 28 countries around the world. The new customer distribution centre in Richmond will be the company’s third Canadian distribution centre.

Employment at the centre will be available in a variety of sectors, including logistics, human resources, safety and security, and operations. Job opportunities will be posted at www.IKEA.ca
