Coquitlam RCMP say a British Columbia man who was on the run, allegedly trying to evade sentencing for a separate crime, is now back in custody.

Police say members of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team arrested 25-year-old Arjun Singh Purewal on Tuesday (Sept. 20) at a Surrey home as they followed leads related to a separate murder in Richmond.

Vancouver police issued a notice on Sept. 2 that Purewal was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant and was deemed a public safety risk.

He was wanted for breaching conditions related to his release from custody on a kidnapping charge.

Purewal, along with co-accused Ashley Smith and Michael Husain, plead guilty to kidnapping a victim at gunpoint in Richmond last fall and was scheduled for sentencing next month.

At the time, the VPD and other Metro Vancouver police agencies indicated Purewal should be considered dangerous.

Police say homicide detectives recognized Purewal and arrested him, and he remains in custody awaiting a court appearance.
