Police dogs, helicopter assist in apprehending federal offender who escaped

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — Police in Abbotsford, B.C., say a federal inmate is back in custody following a brief escape. They say in a statement that they responded to a report of shots fired Thursday just before 3 p.m.

Police in Abbotsford, B.C., say a federal inmate is back in custody following a brief escape. 

They say in a statement that they responded to a report of shots fired Thursday just before 3 p.m. 

Police say Correctional Service Canada officers were escorting a federal offender to a medical appointment when he escaped.

Police say that while officers tried to apprehend the offender, a correctional officer shot a gun but no one was injured. 

They say the inmate, who was not identified, was found with the help of police, police dogs and an RCMP helicopter.

Police say the public is not at risk and major crime detectives are investigating.
