B.C. Ferries is warning that several Saturday sailings on the Salish Eagle risk cancellation because of crew shortages.

These sailings are the 4:15 p.m. departure from Village Bay, the 4:50 p.m. departure from Sturdies Bay on Galiano Island, the 10:25 p.m. departure from Tsawwassen and the 11:30 p.m. departure from Sturdies Bay.

Lack of crew on the Kuper vessel has led B.C. Ferries to cancel its Saturday evening sailings starting with the 6 p.m. departure out of Thetis Island. Earlier sailings on the route are expected to go ahead.

A free 12-passenger water taxi will run on the route, starting at 6 p.m.

The cancellations on the busy Easter weekend come as the ferry service added more than 180 extra sailings on major routes to accommodate an expected 400,000 passengers and 160,000 vehicles between Thursday and Monday.

Poor weather and mechanical issues also kept some ferries in dock although some sailings were offered as conditions on the water improved later in the day.

These include the Tachek, which resumed service with a 3:50 p.m. sailing out of Whaletown on Cortes Island to Herriot Bay on Quadra Island.

A mechanical problem with the Island Discovery’s main engine was fixed Saturday and service resumed with the 3:30 p.m. departure from Blubber Bay at Texada Island to Westview at Powell River.
