Schneider won an appeal in February, granting him a retrial on charges of second-degree murder and interference with human remains.

A former Vernon man facing a possible retrial in the 2016 murder of a Japanese exchange student living in Burnaby will have a detention review this week after being denied parole last year.

William Schneider will undergo the Parole Board review on Thursday.

Schneider's sentence of three and a half years for indignity to a human body ends May 1.

He is, however, expected to be kept in custody pending his outstanding murder charge in the death of Natsumi Kogawa, whose body was found stuffed inside a suitcase on the grounds of a vacant Vancouver mansion.

He would then remain in provincial remand, awaiting the potential new murder trial.

Schneider successfully appealed for a new trial following his conviction in 2018 for Kogawa's killing.

He was denied parole in November while awaiting a Supreme Court of Canada ruling on the Crown's appeal of that decision.

The detention review will determine whether Schneider can safely be released to the community when his current sentence ends.

Schneider has had to provide DNA samples and is prohibited for life from possessing any weapons.

Canada's highest court heard the Crown appeal of a Schneider retrial in December.

No judgment has been rendered yet.

The crux of the argument in that decision is the overheard phone conversation in Vernon's Polson Park by Schneider's brother, Warren, that Willy said "I did it" in reference to Kogawa's killing.

Schneider won an appeal in February, granting him a retrial on charges of second-degree murder and interference with human remains.

In denial of his parole in November, the Parole Board found Schneider had not "mitigated or addressed (his) assessed high risk for violence and above average risk for sexual reoffending."

Schneider is being held at the Matsqui Institution penitentiary in Abbotsford.
