Two Halifax youths arrested after allegations about racially motivated assault

HALIFAX — Two youths in Halifax are facing charges following an alleged assault that police say was motivated by racial hatred.

RCMP in suburban Cole Harbour say that on Monday officers were told that a man, woman and two children were in a parking lot when they were followed to their vehicle by three youths who shouted obscenities racist taunts.

The Mounties say one of the youths then sprayed an irritant in the man’s face, and the youths fled on foot.

Two of the suspects were arrested Tuesday in nearby Dartmouth.

Both youths are facing charges of assault with a weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon.

They appeared in Halifax provincial youth court on Wednesday and were released on conditions.

“The RCMP takes incidents of hate with the utmost seriousness,” the statement from the RCMP said.
