Author reads at Brighouse

Richmond author Robert N. Friedland weaves an intricate tale about tension between Chinese tradition and modern life in The Second Wedding of Doctor Geneva Song.

Richmond author Robert N. Friedland weaves an intricate tale about tension between Chinese tradition and modern life in The Second Wedding of Doctor Geneva Song. He will read an excerpt of that tale Friday, March 8 at the Brighouse branch as a part of the Authors in our Midst series.

Friedland will be present along with friend, Willa Chen from Beijing, who will read a short excerpt in Mandarin.

The novel, filled with lust, adultery, murder and forgiveness, chronicles a tumultuous 20-year love affair.

Friedland, a practicing lawyer, admitted parts of the novel were loosely based on his own experiences when talking to the Richmond News after it was first published in 2011.

"It's a great way to express situations in your life, whether frightening or troubling, that you might otherwise not talk about," he had told the News.

The Authors in our Midst series celebrates local authors and their works. The program is free and drop-in.
