Richmond's firefighters are almost always the first on the scene from blazing fires to medical emergencies, but in July their help was needed for a "unique service event" involving a horse.
Richmond Fire-Rescue crews was called on July 21 to a barn on MacKenzie Road, south of Steveston Highway and east of Gilbert Road, to help a horse that couldn't "effectively right itself," according to a community safety report.
The fire department's technical (high angle) rescue team met with the horse's owner and veterinarian on-site to develop a safety plan for the horse.
"After some attempts, the crews, using an innovative application of technical rescue techniques were able to assist the horse to its feet, after which time the owner was able to take the horse under control with the aid of the attending vet," reads the report.
The fire department described this as a unique event and a real-life practice for the on-duty technical team for future rescue needs.
