Lost pets: Gerbils, hen, cats found in Richmond last week

The animals are put up for adoption if they are not identified within 72 hours.

Gerbils, cats and a hen were some of the lost animals that found a temporary home at the Richmond Animal Shelter over the past week.

According to BC SPCA Richmond's Facebook post on March 18, a pair of gerbils were found in an unknown Richmond location with no identification.

Krista Shaw, manager at the Richmond Animal Shelter operated by BC SPCA Richmond, told the Richmond News the duo was picked up by a member of the public who spotted them on the side of the road.

"She is not local and was unsure what area she was in when she found them," she added.

A vet has since checked on the gerbils and confirmed they are seniors, and the shelter is figuring out the next steps in vet care.

Also seeking its owner is a black male cat found on Ferndale Road late at night on March 17, who did not have any forms of identification.

Shaw told the News the shelter always has a "steady stream" of lost animals and bylaws stipulate that unclaimed animals apart from dogs will be up for adoption after 72 dogs. Unclaimed dogs, on the other hand, can be adopted after 96 hours.

Sylvie, a friendly female cat found in the 5000 block of Floyd Avenue last week, is one of the animals seeking a "furever" home. She was found wearing a pink collar but had no identification and her owner did not come forward.

Meanwhile, a hen found on McCallan Road with no forms of identification about six days ago has been adopted after waiting 72 hours for its owner to show up.
