WINNIPEG — Manitoba RCMP have charged a man with first-degree murder, more than two years after a double homicide in a remote northern community.

The remains of a man and woman were found inside a home that had been engulfed in flames in 2021 on the Northlands Denesuline First Nation.

RCMP say autopsies showed the two died from injuries from a firearm.

The Mounties say a man who had been in the home left after a dispute and returned with a firearm, killed the two, and then a fire erupted.

The investigation stretched into Saskatchewan, where police arrested Leon Paul Mercredi this week in the community of Fond Du Lac.

Mercredi, who is originally from Northlands Denesuline First Nation, remains in custody.
