Whistler council will consider implementing user fees for electric vehicle charging stations at its March 2 meeting.
A report from climate action coordinator Luisa Burhenne recommends bringing on the fees in three phases, starting this spring with municipal chargers outside of the day lots.
An introductory fee of $1 per hour is proposed.
Phase 2 (beginning December 2021) proposes to expand user fees to the day lots, again starting at $1 per hour and with a ceiling of $5 per day. Fees for charging stations outside of the day lots would also rise to $2 per hour in Phase 2.
“The implementation and amount of the EV charging station user fee at the day lots will depend on more reliable long-term EV charging usage data,” reads a report to council.
Phase 3 proposes to use EV charger usage data gleaned from the first two phases to build a long-term strategy around user fees, primarily with a goal of keeping EV commuting more cost effective than driving a traditional car.
“In addition, all user fee adjustments at the charging station in the day lots will be discussed with the Day Lot Operating Committee and aligned with day lot parking rate changes,” the report reads.
Council will also hear a presentation challenging the resort to do more to meet its climate targets on March 2.
